A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose term concluded the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, beating predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition urged an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital initiatives.
