British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several entry passages providing entry to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their courage," Healey commented. "They were part of thousands of UK service members on duty over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

During December, the US military carried out what it described as a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
