Early Saturday morning, reports emerged of major blasts rocking the Iranian capital, following statements from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preemptive military action.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday. Simultaneously, two plumes of dense smoke were seen rising over the centre and east of the city.
“The nature of these blasts suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet reported, without initially offer further details.
Context: Escalating Strains and Prior Developments
The incident occurs against a background of severely escalated tensions in the region. Major developments preceding this attack include:
- US Military Buildup: A massive build-up of US naval forces in the region, featuring the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent talks between the US and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with indications of further talks scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the attack, a senior US official had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered warnings regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
In response to prior accusations, Iranian officials had charged the United States of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. They rejected claims about missile development and casualty figures as unfounded.
The situation remains fluid, with additional reports expected as events unfold.
